Research Experience, Publications and Presentations
Dr. Monteiro's research focuses on understanding the mental health needs of people globally, particularly in different parts of Africa and developing countries, in addition to vulnerable groups in the U.S. She explores how culture intersects with mental health and mental illness and how experiences such as war and trauma affect mental health.
Dr. Monteiro carried out field research for her doctoral dissertation - funded by the David L. Boren International Fellowship - in Ethiopia where she explored the conceptualization of mental illness in rural and urban areas of the country and also studied the Amharic language. She has conducted similar research on the perceptions of mental illness in rural Senegal and Botswana. She developed a Global Mental Health training program for psychology graduate students, allowing them to gain cultural immersion and research experience in Senegal. The program encouraged doctoral and master's students to expand their understanding of cultural competence and develop global mental health research and leadership skills.
